I succeeded in making a new tree root. It will be reborn as a new bonsai.

It blows my mind that you can cut away so much of a tree and it survives. This is so much more like sculpture than I expected

A sankakuto might be a good tool to use to make the notches in the trunk, although you did a very clean job with the saw

That makes no sense as a statement what so ever, you can not make a tree, you can only grow a tree.
The art of bonsai is what you can make, not grow, so his statement is correct although I see where your coming from.
